to get a mangakyu sharingan one must kill one’s best friend. kakashi basically killed his best friend when he took his eye (sharingan eye) out to make up for his damaged eye, meaning he technically had his mangakyu active. but since kakashi is not from the uchiha clan it took him years to figure out how to use the mangakyu.

when kakashi had sharingan it was only first stage, it had progressed to second stage by shonen jump which is attainted through strain and danger, the final stage, mangekyo sharingan is attained when feeling the loss of someone dear, you dont see kakashi fight in non filler arcs after the death of the third hokage, so my theory is that is what triggered his mangekyo, though it is unexplained otherwise

also ye the real “pain” is a proper mess, controlling all the others, and the “new” pain is just another animal path to replace the one Jiraya killed
